This LNER Tube Wagon was built by the Cambrian Wagon Company in 1947 with a 19ft wheel base.
Tube wagons were designed to carry a bit more than just tubes; they were capable of carrying anything longer than normal, such as pipes for fuel, water and drainage, but they were also capable of carrying reinforcing rods, girders, etc.
They were also capable of carrying other goods such as wood, poles and concrete. The open top nature of the wagons allowed for easy loading and unloading of goods by crane.
It is sometimes referred to as a 5 plank open wagon because it has no roof, and the sides of the wagon are 5 planks tall. It is currently owned by the Colne Valley Railway and is in an operational condition.
It has the TOPS code of STV.
These wagons played an important role in the rebuilding of Britain as they allowed for large bits of infrastructure and construction material to be transported simply and easily.
